“Prakariti ka Aashirwad” – that is what Swami Ramdev believes and preaches in.
Born in a small village of Haryana, he fought poverty, lack of resources and lead an early childhood full of challenges. But nothing could curb his eagerness to learn about ancient Indian scriptures and texts. He studied Sanskrit Vyākaraṇa, Yoga, Darśana, Vedas and Upaniṣads, later he was very much inspired by the life and writings of Maharṣi Dayanand that he thoroughly studied Satyārtha Prakāśa and Ṛgvedādibhāṣyabhūmikā, along-side the magnetism of Maharṣi.
He learnt the ancient Indian art of Yoga, meditation & Ayurveda in different Gurukul’s (Indian traditional schools) & became a Yoga icon & spiritual guide for millions, honorably called as Swami Ramdev or simply Baba Ramdev. He is a renowned Yoga Guru, face of Ayurveda (brand ambassador of one of the world’s biggest Ayurveda & FMCG company Patanjali) & also a social activist.
Yogis in Indian culture are being considered as the Guide of the society, who impart moral values in social system, spread spiritual wisdom to the mass & dedicate their entire life in the service & welfare of the society without any biasness based on Religion /caste /creed /age /gender /ethnicity /social-economical background, which is the core principal of Yoga and is a profound path of Sanatan Dharma in the Indian culture.
Yoga which had been practiced in India since thousands of years by common people under the guidance of Guru for physical & spiritual wellbeing. By practicing Yoga, individual not only can maintain physical fitness, protect the body from diseases, get mental peace but also can attain the next level of spiritualism. It is a scientific process to remain physically fit, avoid common diseases caused by our unhealthy lifestyle. It increases mind and brain’s efficiency, helps to increase focus on work, helps to overcome emotional breakdown, hypertension, mental trauma, depression, reduces anger, control negative thoughts & increases positive energy & willpower. It is also claimed that Yoga is very beneficial for chronic diseases which are considered as uncurable & even cure physical disabilities like partial or full paralysis. Swami Ramdev himself claims that he was a sufferer of partial paralysis in his childhood & later got cured by practicing Yoga.
Yoga indeed is a great gift of ancient India to modern world and mankind; it has brought a positive change in human life & has shown solutions to lots of health & spiritual related unsolved queries. The world, especially the western world had realized the benefits of Yoga a long ago & several westerners started exploring Yoga/meditation for personal as well as social wellbeing.
Unfortunately after going through 1000 years of foreign invasion, colonization & distortion of Indian History and heritage; by maligning Indian Holy Scriptures, customs, spirituality & by attacking on Indian social system and Dharma by the leftist historians, scholars & ruling government has resulted in creating a distance between ancient Indian culture and practices. The same conspiracy is still going on.
The masses of India i.e. the middle & lower class forgot practicing Yoga and meditation due to lack of proper platform & an inferiority complex for its own rich culture and heritage due to the affects & the conspiracy of the above-mentioned reasons. The masses started considering Yoga as an activity of the elite class or meant for Saint’s and Yogis only. There was no proper guide who could address the vast masses & educate them about the purpose & benefits of Yoga. Yoga Guru Ramdev decided to change the situation & started free Yoga workshops where middle/lower class people could attend & enjoy the fruits of Yoga.
Rather than giving lectures about Yoga philosophy, spirituality, Yoga sutra’s or advising them to read Sanatan holy scriptures, which are considered as a key to open the doors of endless knowledge & wisdom and could be difficult for a laymen to understand properly without any expert guidance, he started teaching Yoga in a very simplified way which even a villager without any prior knowledge about Yoga can understand & practice safely at home. He started teaching simple Yoga poses which are easy to remember & easy to practice. It came as a boon for the country at a time when India was struggling with poverty, unemployment, a weak health care system & a society prone to common diseases like diabetes, heart problem, arthritis, hypertension, depression, anxiety, blood pressure etc. and they all found Yoga as their savior.
In 2002 a religious TV channel gave a platform to Swami Ramdev to host a morning show where he used to teach audiences Yoga which attracted huge TRPs & donations to keep his good work on. With each passing day the show started attracting huge positive ratings, increase viewership & Baba Ramdev became a Yoga icon & spiritual guide of Indian masses. Millions & millions of middle Indian common people started practicing Yoga, inspired by his Yoga based programs on TV channels. People started discussing about Baba Ramdev & his simple Yoga poses & its benefits in all nook & corners of India. People of all age groups, social background and faith started showing great interest & enthusiasm towards Yoga. It was a time of revival of Yoga & meditation & Baba Ramdev became the prominent face of Yoga.
Baba Ramdev who possess a great knowledge on ancient Indian medical science called Ayurveda believes that individual must get freedom from an unhealthy body. He primarily blames unhealthy foreign products which he considers Poison for human body & puts emphasis on returning to Ayurveda, as Ayurvedic products and medicines are herbal in nature without any side effect. He is the brand ambassador of Patanjali Ayurveda Limited, which is established by Baba Ramdev along with Balkrishna who a Saint & CEO of Patanjali.
Patanjali today is one of the most trusted brands & ranked top in the FMCG category in India. Though Baba Ramdev don’t own any shares of Patanjali (as he is a saint & a saint can’t be money oriented). But Patanjali has given a very tough competition to global FMCG MNC companies in India & it became a question of existence for many such companies. Swami Ramdev believes that such MNC’s were playing with the health of millions of Indians with their poor-quality products & Patanjali Ayurveda is a positive alternative for Indians.
Swami Ramdev’s Yoga programs are not limited to India & Indian subcontinent but opened their branches in western countries as well & he has millions of followers worldwide. Students from UK, USA, Japan etc. come to him to learn Yoga. He is a social activist as well & very much active on social welfare programs.
- He founded an institute to promote Yoga & Ayurveda (which is operational in India, UK, USA, Nepal, Canada & Mauritius).
- Providing free education to many children.
- Taking care of the children of Martyrs of Indian Forces.
- Making North-east India a business hub.
- Providing scholarship to 1 crore candidates.
- Empowering the agriculturist.
In 2006, he was invited by Kofi Annan to deliver a lecture at a United Nations conference. Legislature of the U.S. State of New Jersey honored him for his remarkable history of steadfast commitment to improving health in mind, body & spirit. He also has received the highest Indian Civil Award Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
Apart from a Yoga Guru, he is a great patriot also. He strongly advocates that indigenous companies should lead the Indian market so that the profit share doesn’t go outside India, which will strengthen the Indian economy. It seems he is successful up to a great extend as every other product in Indian household are Patanjali products or other Indian products & Indian people have restored again a great faith upon Ayurvedic medicines and products. He once stated that “The biggest goal is to bring prestige to India & Indian identity within the country & the world. And the journey begins from Yoga & Ayurveda”.
As a Yogi he dreams & believes in a society which by practicing Yoga will be free from diseases & sins. He even claims that Yoga can cure HIV & cancer. Ramdev’s main Yoga center is based in Haridwar, India, a city on the banks of the holy river Ganga near the foothills of the Himalayas where his followers gather from different corner of the world learn Yoga & meditation from him without the presence of camera, fame, material luxury, distraction & enjoy the divinity & deep knowledge and wisdom of Yoga & meditation. Swami Ramdev has dedicated his life to Yoga & mankind which makes him rule a million hearts worldwide & he is truly spreading the message of Yoga & Sanatana Dharma and culture which is-
Om SarveBhvantuSukhinah (Om, may all be happy)
SarveSantuNirmayaah (May all be free from illness)
